ESPN signs new WTA broadcast deal

US broadcaster ESPN has penned a six-year multi-platform rights deal with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The deal, which focuses on providing coverage through the US network’s ESPN3 channel, was announced on Monday, a day before the start of the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Manly suggests Dubai destination for World Club Challenge

Manly Sea Eagles, the newly-crowned Australian National Rugby League (NRL) champion, has suggested Dubai as a venue for rugby league’s World Club Challenge in 2012. The match, which is staged between the champions of the Australian and English rugby leagues, has been staged in England for the past 11 years.

Gabon ready to welcome Africa’s finest

Gabon is ready to play its part in staging a successful 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, according to tournament organisers. The country, located on the west coast of Africa, was awarded the rights to co-host the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) showpiece tournament with neighbour Equatorial Guinea in July 2007. The 2012 Cup of Nations is set to commence on January 21 with the draw for the competition taking place on Saturday.

Premier League chief dismisses relegation claim

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has slammed suggestions that the concept of relegation and promotion could be scrapped, dismissing the idea as “scare-mongering”. Last week saw Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers’ Association, state that some of the foreign owners in the Barclays Premier League want to abolish the relegation and promotion system in the top flight sparking great debate within English football circles. Liverpool’s American owner John Henry has already dismissed the idea as “complete nonsense,” telling The Associated Press it “hasn’t been discussed”.

US set to secure second F1 grand prix

The United States is set to host two Formula One grands prix in 2013, with various reports stating that a race around the streets of New Jersey is likely to be announced this week. F1 will return to the USA next year with a November event in Austin, Texas, but according to the Wall Street Journal, another race will be staged at a street circuit in Weehawken and West New York along the Hudson River in June 2013
