TTFF chief quits in wake of FIFA investigation

Posted October 31, 2011 by Sports Business Insider

Oliver Camps has announced his resignation as president of the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) after blasting the “current climate” that exists within FIFA. Camps was last week named as one of 10 officials being investigated by FIFA as it steps up its campaign to determine exactly what occurred at May’s infamous Caribbean Football Union (CFU) meeting. FIFA announced that the 10 CFU officials will be investigated concerning possible violations of its Code of Ethics. The case revolves around the meeting in Trinidad which led to the eventual downfall of former Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed bin Hammam and Confederation of North and Central American and Caribbean Football (CONCACAF) counterpart Jack Warner. Camps’ decision to resign ends a 19-year reign as head of the TTFF during which the national team narrowly failed to qualify for both the 1974 and 1990 World Cups before eventually making it to the 2006 tournament in Germany. “I have truly enjoyed working with the football fraternity and appreciated the opportunities which have been given to me through football, but when the price one has to pay includes the sullying of one’s name and the denigrating of one’s character without a justifiable reason, then I must confess that this is not the place that I would want to be,” Camps said. “It is certainly a sad day for me and this is far from what I had expected. The changing of the guards was never meant to engender the bitterness that I feel or the pain which has replaced the pleasure of service.” Camps has refused to express his regret at being part of May’s CFU meeting, adding his belief that those present will be vindicated. “In no way am I disappointed that I was a part of the Caribbean Football Union meeting which met to determine the path to choose a leader for the FIFA,” he added. “The current situation facing the CFU now has made it very clear to me that our choice in meeting to discuss whether president Sepp Blatter would be the preferred option was the right one. History will not judge me for being a part of that meeting neither will it condemn me based on association. Rather history will applaud all the football leaders of the Caribbean.”
