Brisbane’s bid for the 2028 Olympics is reportedly in doubt as the International Olympic Committee is considering an idea to award the Summer Games to whoever loses their bid to host the 2024 Games.
IOC president Thomas Bach has floated the idea of the IOC awarding both the 2024 and 2028 Games when the successful 2024 bid is handed down in Peru in September.
Bach has spoken about reforming the bid process so that there are not too many losers.
He is quoted in The Australian: “Let us discuss. This is a discussion.” Before adding: “It also depends on the timing. This is, you know, why I appreciate also the public discussion. There are many options.”
Budapest is poised to withdraw from the 2024 race after a referendum showed a lack of enthusiasm for the city’s bid, which leaves only Paris and Los Angeles in the running.
Despite Brisbane, and southeast Queensland, undertaking a feasibility study into hosting the 2028 Games, a dual appointment may push out the region’s hopes of an Olympics bid by another four years.
