The AFL has partnered with Fox Sports to live stream matches direct to international consumers via a paid-for app.
The app is called Watch AFL and it is the broadcaster’s first foray into international streaming. It will offer every AFL Premiership game live in addition to Fox Sports produced programming such as AFL360.
Access to Watch AFL is blocked in Australia, where the code has a streaming service in partnership with Telstra via their AFL Live app.
The AFL has already appointed Fox Sports to sell the code’s international broadcast rights from 2018.
Fox Sports chief Patrick Delany told The Australian that the app is an early test case into live streaming for the broadcaster.
“It gives Fox Sports the opportunity to gain more expertise in streaming and broaden our revenue base beyond Australia,” Delany said.
“It’s been a great project because we started experimenting with streaming last year with the Fox Sports Now app, which has gone pretty well, but this deal gives us the worldwide rights to deliver a consumer streaming service in addition to representing the AFL globally as a sales agent.”
