Branding: You can’t draw a Wanderer, so new logo is a safe and solid bet

The new Western Sydney Wanderers FC have played it safe with their logo, revealed along with the name today.

That is part and parcel of adopting a traditional look. It’s hard to illustrate a ‘Wanderer’, so a monogram was always on the cards.

The logo looks good to my eye. It’s a bit of a bagel in the middle with so many interwoven elements, but overall it’s simple and stylish. The kit colours are strong and the hoops look like a true football kit. There’s nothing here for fans to hate there and it’s a solid start.

The big question now is something that wasn’t on the agenda today. Who will be the major sponsor, and how will that gel with the jersey?

Hopefully the boldness of the design isn’t lost when they plaster a sponsor over the chest.
